Mathematics Lesson Plan for 1st Graders

Lesson Plan Title: Snowflakes Are Falling
Grade Level: 1st grade
Subject Area: Geometry
Topic: Different shapes in snowflakes
Lesson Summary: This lesson is designated to show students the different shapes that are presented in their everyday lives and the numerous ways to develop shapes. This activity will show them that our lives are surrounded by shapes.
Prerequisites: Familiarity with shapes and how to draw/cut them out as well.
South Dakota State Standards:
Indicator 1: Use deductive and inductive reasoning to recognize and apply properties of geometric figures.
1.G.1.1. Students are able to describe characteristics of plane figures.
1.G.1.2. Students are able to sort basic three-dimensional figures.
Lesson Objectives:
Students will be able to:
       1. Identify different shapes in everyday life. (visual/spatial)
       2. Differentiate the 3-dimensional figures. (logical/mathematical)
       3. Explain why shapes are important in our everyday lives. (verbal/linguistic)
       4. Write imaginative journal entries of being a snowflake. (intrapersonal)
       5. Create several snowflakes with different cut out shapes. (body/kinesthetic)
Materials: colored paper, scissors, string, paper clips, bulletin board
Procedural Activities:
The students will discuss and identify the many shapes that make up surrounding things in our lives.
The students will then make snowflakes by cutting a piece of colored paper in a circle. After cutting out the snowflake they will then fold it in half and start making different shapes on both the folded side and outer parts of the snowflake.
The criterion of the activity is to be able to identify and make shapes as part of the snowflake.
Assessment: As a grading criterion the students will need to create a snowflake and be able to make at least four different shapes within the snowflake and be able to recognize the different shapes they will be making before and after the finished product.
